Dongguan Airport Transfer Guide: Baiyun, Bao'an or Hong Kong — How to Choose, What It Costs, How It Works

Xiangrui Coach Rental · 2026-09-06 · 6 min read

Dongguan has no airport of its own. Visitors flying in for factory visits, the Canton Fair or Pearl River Delta business trips land at one of three nearby airports: Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Bao'an or Hong Kong International. This guide compares the three options, explains how transfer pricing works, and walks through the pickup process step by step — so your first hour in the PRD is not the stressful one.

1. Which airport should you fly into?

There is no "best" airport in absolute terms — the right choice depends on where you fly from and where you need to be:

AirportDistance to DongguanTypical TransferBest For
Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN)~80 km1.5-2 hrsWidest international network (Europe, Middle East, US)
Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX)~55 km1-1.5 hrsShortest drive; Asian regional routes
Hong Kong Intl (HKG)~130 km2.5-3 hrs incl. borderDense international frequencies

Practical rule: book the flight that lands closest to your meetings, then arrange the transfer separately. Many buyers choose Baiyun or Hong Kong for the connections, then take a pre-booked coach straight to their supplier in Dongguan or elsewhere in the PRD — roughly 90 minutes from Baiyun.

2. Private coach vs taxis vs shuttle buses

For a solo traveller with one bag a taxi or ride-hailing app works. For anyone visiting factories or travelling as a group, a pre-booked private coach (a charter bus with driver) is usually the better call:

3. One-way, return, full-day hire or monthly plan

Chinese coach companies price in four ways. Knowing the difference stops you from overpaying or under-booking:

  • One-way trip price — airport to destination (or reverse), a single fixed price covering driver, fuel, tolls and insurance. The basic quotation unit.
  • Return trip price — the same route both ways (drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening). A packaged return price usually beats two one-ways.
  • Half-day / full-day hire — when your day has several stops (land at 9 am, visit two factories, hotel by 6 pm), one vehicle and driver at one daily price almost always beats paying per leg.
  • Monthly plan — fixed routes on a regular schedule, one monthly price at the lowest unit cost.

Rule of thumb: single pickup/drop-off = ask for one-way or return; multi-stop day = full-day hire; fixed regular route = monthly plan.

4. What does an airport transfer cost in Dongguan?

Reference one-way prices (CNY per trip, driver, fuel, tolls and insurance included) for Dongguan city to/from the two mainland airports:

VehicleDongguan ↔ Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX)Dongguan ↔ Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN)
7-seat business vanCNY 350CNY 400
22-seat minibusCNY 900CNY 1,000
38-seat coachCNY 1,100CNY 1,200
45-seat coachCNY 1,200CNY 1,300

Notes: one-way fixed prices; return trips get a packaged rate. Multi-stop days (pickup + factory visit + hotel) are better quoted as half-day / full-day hire. Hong Kong airport transfers use GD-HK dual-plate vehicles and are quoted separately. Prices may rise during exhibition peak (Canton Fair) — the written quote within 1 hour is what you pay. 5. The pickup process, step by step

  1. Send your flight details — flight number, date, arrival time, headcount, destination. The flight number matters: the operator uses it to track the aircraft in real time.
  2. Confirm vehicle and fixed price — written quote, usually within 1 hour.
  3. Meet & greet at arrivals — the driver waits at the arrivals exit and calls or messages you when you land.
  4. Delayed flight? No rebooking needed — pickup adjusts to the actual landing time; very long delays are reconfirmed with you directly.

6. Arriving at Hong Kong International — the special case

Hong Kong is 130 km from Dongguan and the transfer crosses the mainland border. Two options exist:

  • Public border crossing — Airport Express to the border, walk across, then another vehicle on the mainland side. Luggage handled three or four times.
  • GD-HK dual-plate coach — registered with both Guangdong and Hong Kong plates, crossing at Shenzhen Bay or Huanggang with no vehicle change — passengers clear on foot with their luggage and rejoin the same coach. You board once at the airport and step off at your Dongguan destination.

If your itinerary includes both Hong Kong and the PRD (common for buyers visiting suppliers on both sides), the dual-plate coach behaves like a private car for the whole trip.

7. Airport transfer as part of a factory visit day

A typical foreign buyer day in Dongguan: morning landing at Baiyun or Hong Kong → transfer to the first factory → two plant visits → hotel in the evening. That whole day is normally arranged as one full-day hire with a van or minibus — the vehicle and driver stay with you between stops, and the daily price is agreed in advance. It is usually cheaper than three separate transfers and removes all waiting between appointments.
